Barcelona finds themselves at a tactical crossroads as the new La Liga season approaches, with the Catalan giants potentially set to compete without a traditional number nine for the first time in years.
Despite an ambitious summer transfer window that has seen them strengthen multiple areas of their squad, the Spanish champions remain without an established senior striker following the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.
Summer Reinforcements Leave Notable Gap
Hansi Flick's side have invested heavily across the pitch, securing Rodri from Manchester City to add a Ballon d'Or winner and World Cup-winning captain to an already star-studded midfield.
The attack has been bolstered with the arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, who bring pace and width to Barcelona's forward line. Eighteen-year-old Belgian winger Jesse Bisiwu has also joined as a long-term prospect.
However, the most glaring omission remains up front. With their La Liga opener away to Elche scheduled for Sunday, 23 August, Barcelona could begin their title defence without a recognised centre-forward if no deal is completed before the 1 September transfer deadline.
Lewandowski and Torres Departures Create Void
The striker dilemma stems from two significant exits. Robert Lewandowski, 37, departed for Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer upon the expiration of his contract, ending his prolific spell at Camp Nou.
Meanwhile, Ferran Torres completed a €50 million (£42.7m) move to Paris Saint-Germain. Torres had been instrumental last season, netting 21 goals across 49 appearances and frequently serving as an alternative to Lewandowski through the middle.
These departures leave Barcelona without a senior goal poacher in their first-team squad, forcing Flick to consider unconventional solutions.
Julian Alvarez: The Preferred Target Who May Not Arrive
Barcelona's hierarchy have made their preference clear: signing Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid tops their wishlist. The 26-year-old Argentina international publicly expressed his desire for a move during the World Cup, stating his ambition to join the Catalan club.
However, Atletico Madrid have taken an uncompromising stance. Chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin declared the club would not sell Alvarez, even for €200 million (£170.8m). Diego Simeone has since confirmed Alvarez will not feature in their La Liga opener against Malaga amid the ongoing transfer standoff.
Atletico have reportedly set a release clause of €500 million to deter any approaches, effectively blocking Barcelona's primary target.
Flick's Tactical Alternatives: False Nine System
Despite the lack of a traditional striker, Hansi Flick insists he has viable options within his current squad.
"We know we have to do something," Flick acknowledged this month, highlighting Lamine Yamal's versatility and the adaptability of Gordon and Adeyemi.

Dani Olmo offers another false nine option, while Raphinha has been utilised centrally by Flick during pre-season. Fermin Lopez has also expressed comfort playing through the middle and has participated in false nine drills.
Gordon and Adeyemi provide direct running and pace, though neither fits the conventional number nine profile.

The striker shortage could present a breakthrough opportunity for 18-year-old Egyptian international Hamza Abdelkarim, signed this summer.

However, persuading Arsenal to sell after just 12 months would require a significant financial commitment from Barcelona.
